18 PORTALS offers an introspective look at the present condition of Hong Kong’s land and population distribution through a highly visual and interactive installation piece. The physical representation of the varying population density data results in an “unstable” looking sculpture, pushing the audience to ponder how we can live together in this unusual urbanscape.
To understand the diversity and resources distribution in Hong Kong, we can compare the difference between the 18 districts within. We represent the population density and the average living area of the 18 districts through the size and length of the cones, we visualize the data and reality of uneven distribution. The more the differences are, the more unstable the installation piece will be. Each cone is also designed to be viewed inside. Selected images of the living environment of each district to be displayed inside the cones as a peek to the audience a view of Hong Kong, where Hong Kong indeed comprises of not only modernized highrise but also old pre-war buildings, country park and New Territories houses etc. We designed to include one cone of mirror inside as represent the audience’s own living environment as a reflection of the comparison.
