Refined Scandinavian Design for a Duplex Vacation Home in Hong Kong

This modern duplex at CentreStage was thoughtfully co-created with a Swedish couple who founded a sleek Scandinavian watch brand. Designed as a vacation retreat in Hong Kong, the space reflects their preference for minimalist luxury, European finishes, and functional elegance. LOT Architects transformed the duplex — including its rooftop — into a seamless blend of Nordic calm and urban sophistication.

Design Philosophy: Scandinavian Minimalism Meets Urban Comfort

The design journey for this project embraced a refined and versatile Scandinavian aesthetic, balancing natural materials, soft lighting, and functionality. Every detail was curated in collaboration with the client, whose design sensibility informed the layout and material palette.

On the ground floor, sweeping panoramic sea views create a serene backdrop to a minimalist living area, where an elegant, hidden TV system is concealed behind large sliding panels. A semi-transparent wood strip screen subtly separates the lounge and dining areas while maintaining visual openness.

The dining space features a custom walnut table contrasting beautifully with the natural marble kitchen bar counter. Behind it, a book-matched marble feature wall and a walk-in freezer — tailored to the European lifestyle — elevate the culinary experience, offering storage for fine cheeses and wine.

Spatial Flow and Materiality

The newly constructed staircase, finished in natural wood flooring and textured painted walls, leads to the lower level. Here, the guest bedroom and master suite are situated, continuing the home’s quiet luxury.

The master bedroom includes a spacious walk-in wardrobe with glass-front cabinetry. A low ceiling in the ensuite bathroom posed a design challenge, overcome by installing a custom light panel that softens the height while providing ambient illumination. All bathroom surfaces feature Italian Salvatori stone, known for its tactile beauty and timeless quality.

Most materials, including stone, wood finishes, and lighting systems, were imported directly from Europe, ensuring an authentic expression of Scandinavian design principles.

Rooftop Retreat: Private Jacuzzi and Outdoor Cinema

The rooftop space was redesigned as a tranquil outdoor escape, complete with a custom-built Jacuzzi under a timber pergola with concealed LED lighting. Adjacent is a cozy outdoor movie area, featuring projector-ready surfaces for al fresco screenings. This rooftop oasis reflects the client’s desire for a calming, luxurious extension of the home — perfect for entertaining or unwinding.
